Tips to Make Your Home Smell Fresh

  • 1 min read

Life is busy these days. We’ve got errands to run, friends and family to see, and lots of to-do lists. So how do we make sure we’re taken care of, too?

With little changes and attention to detail, you can turn your home into a place that cares for you, starting with aromatics. It’s amazing how a fresh-smelling home can immediately lift your spirits and how simple it is to achieve.

Keep reading to find out how you can make your home smell like a meadow without resorting to stuffy aerosols and sprays.

Aromatherapy With a Humidifier

Because who doesn't love a good 2-in-1? Look for a humidifier that can improve your home’s humidity and add a light, pleasant fragrance simultaneously. These humidifiers will work well with essential oils, allowing you to add your favorite combination of scents.

The Levoit LV600S Smart Hybrid Ultrasonic Humidifier not only provides warm and cool mist options, but also features a built-in aroma box. Just slide out the box, add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to the aroma pad, and replace the box. Your home will smell wonderful in no time.

Oil Diffuser

If you’d rather not go the 2-in-1 route, try an oil diffuser. An oil diffuser won’t affect humidity levels, but it will provide a stronger aroma. Mix and match essential oils for a blend that will bring your home together in harmony.

A few of our favorite essential oil combinations:

Relax: lavender and orange

Soothe: peppermint and eucalyptus

Uplift: bergamot and chamomile

Focus: lemon and basil

Candles & Candle Warmers

Candles are a traditional and quick way to enjoy your favorite scents. If you’re sensitive to artificial fragrances, look for candles made with essential oils. A high-quality, natural candle will likely be poured with soy or beeswax and feature a cotton or wooden wick.

If you have little ones or rambunctious pets, you may opt for a candle warmer instead. This option provides mood-boosting fragrances without an open flame.

Simmer Pot

A simmer pot is a fun and classy way to spruce up a gathering by slowly diffusing the scents of herbs, fruit, and spices in a pot of hot water. Here’s how to make one:

Fill a stovetop pot or slow cooker with water, add your ingredients (suggestions listed below), cover with a lid, and turn the heat up to high. Once the water starts steaming, remove the lid and turn the heat down to low. Please exercise caution if you decide to try this method, especially around pets or young children.

While your guests enjoy the delicious fragrance of your simmer pot, make sure to check in on it every 30–45 minutes so that the water doesn’t get too low.

A list of ingredient options for your simmer pot (mix and match as you see fit!):

  • Citrus peels or slices
  • Rosemary sprigs
  • Cranberries
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Sliced apples
  • Lavender

Fresh Flowers & Herbs

A bouquet of lovely blooms can cheer up any space. Flowers such as roses, lavender, sweet peas, azaleas, and gardenias are some of the most fragrant blossoms you can find.

Check the flower selection at your local grocery store or farmer’s market. Browsing all the beautiful options can be just as uplifting as bringing them home.

Air Purifier

An air purifier with an activated carbon filter is an easy, hassle-free way to freshen up your home. Activated carbon can help eliminate smells from cooking, pets, and other sources, so the next time you cook salmon for dinner or bathe your dog, you may have less to worry about when it comes to any lingering odors. Better yet, the air inside your home will be not only smell fresh but will also be filtered clean.
