TL;DR Summary: Summer sun and dry air can wreak havoc on your skin. Stay hydrated, wear SPF, moisturize, and use a humidifier indoors to protect and nourish your skin all season long.
Summer is a resourceful storyteller. She uses every last drop of springtime rain to create a fairytale-esque landscape of green grass and colorful flowers. However, as our direct exposure to UV rays increases during the summer months, so does the potential for sunburn and dry skin. But we’re resourceful, too. Here's how to keep your skin hydrated during this sunny season.
1. Wear Sunscreen
We’ve all heard this, but it can’t be said enough: wear sunscreen. Chemical and mineral sunscreens with SPF 30 or higher help protect your skin from UV rays that cause sunburn, dry skin, and even blisters. Most sunscreens recommend applying the product 15 minutes before sun exposure, so make sure to plan ahead.
2. Find Shade (or Make Your Own)
Wide-brimmed hats and rash guards with UPF fabric help protect your skin from UV rays, decreasing the potential for sunburn and irritation. If you’re spending a day at the beach, tents and umbrellas are a great way to add extra sun protection.
3. Stay Hydrated
Another common piece of advice we sometimes forget to follow is remembering to drink water! The skin is your biggest organ and adequate hydration is essential for it to function properly. If your summer plans take you places that don’t have water readily available, invest in a water bottle that’s easy to carry or tuck in your backpack.
4. Don’t Skip Moisturizing
Some people skip moisturizing in summer, thinking their skin is already oily enough. However, oily skin can be a symptom of excess sebum produced to counteract dryness. Moisturizers help hydrate our skin and often include other beneficial, skin-brightening ingredients such as niacinamide and vitamin C.
5. Check Your Indoor Humidity
Blasting the AC on those hot summer days? While this makes your home more comfortable temperature-wise, it also dries your air. If the relative humidity in your home is too low, consider using an evaporative or ultrasonic humidifier. Get one for your office, living room, or nightstand or added comfort while you rest. Here are a few of our favorites:
- Classic 160 Humidifier: This petite but effective humidifier is perfect for your office nook or kitchen, providing uninterrupted comfort for up to 25 hours with the 2.5-liter tank. Featuring a clean, simple design, it delivers fresh humidity without disrupting the aesthetic of your space.
- OasisMist® 450S Smart Humidifier: Warm and cool mist settings make this smart humidifier perfect for dry summer heat and cold winter air. With a top-fill tank, dual 360° nozzles, and smart control, this sleek humidifier makes home humidification easy. Not sure if your indoor humidity is too low? Smart humidifiers with built-in humidity sensors provide real-time updates that let you adjust mist levels with precision.
- Sprout Evaporative Humidifier: This nightstand necessity sets the tone for the day ahead, featuring purified humidification, a customizable night light, and a host of smart features to keep you comfortable while you rest. This evaporative humidifier also features a built-in sensor that updates you on real-time humidity levels.
6. Take Cooler Showers
You don’t have to forgo comfort, but steamy showers may strip oil from your skin and leave it drier than before. Monitor the temperature of your shower to make sure you’re not drying out your skin.
7. Home Facials
Moisturizing face masks can give dry skin a deeper boost of hydration. Find one that works well for your skin type and have a spa night at home!
While a dermatologist will be able to address more complex concerns, these hydrated skin tips can help maintain your glowing skin in summer.

Why is my skin drier in the summer?
Increased sun exposure and air conditioning can dehydrate your skin, stripping it of natural oils.
Should I still moisturize if I have oily skin in summer?
Yes—oily skin can be a response to dehydration. A good moisturizer helps balance and hydrate your skin.
How can a humidifier help dry summer skin?
Humidifiers restore moisture to indoor air, preventing your skin from drying out in air-conditioned spaces.
What’s the best SPF to use?
Dermatologists recommend SPF 30 or higher for broad-spectrum UV protection.
Are cold showers better for dry skin?
Cooler showers help retain your skin’s natural oils, unlike hot water which can dry it out.
