Keep Your Winter Symptoms to a Minimum

We have a few tips for staying healthy during the holiday season.  

Nothing ruins the holidays quite like getting sick. Winter should be a time of coziness and cheer, but lower temperatures and increased dryness can leave you feeling miserable. While we can’t offer complete protection from all the icky things going around this time of year, we’ve put together a helpful explainer on how humidity can help ease discomfort associated with winter ailments and keep you feeling merry and bright.  

Get Some Rest 

A full 8 hours of sleep is especially important during the winter months. Without proper rest, your immune system deteriorates like a domino effect. If you are struggling with a cough or congestion, it can be difficult to fall asleep at night. Thankfully, running a humidifier at bedtime can ease discomfort associated with stuffy nasal passages and dry, irritating coughs. 

Help for Sore Throats 

When you’re feeling under the weather, it can be difficult to focus on anything else, and sore throats are especially distracting. Breathing in dry air on a daily basis can irritate your throat, and unfortunately a heater only exacerbates this issue. A humidifier puts moisture back into your atmosphere and helps moisten dry throats, easing your discomfort 

While you’re at it, don’t forget to treat yourself to a warm cup of tea or water with honey. The warm liquid will help you take in additional fluids while the honey will help ease discomfort from throat pain and coughing.  

Help for Seasonal Irritants 

Winter might not be known for pollen blowing in the breeze, but that doesn’t mean sneezing, itchy eyes, and runny noses take a vacation. More time spent inside means more exposure to indoor irritants like dust mites and mold, not to mention fur and pet dander. Symptoms can flare up considerably during winter months, but humidity can give you a break from the discomfort by helping to keep your nasal passages moistened 

If you also have an air purifier, we recommend running it regularly to limit your exposure to indoor irritants.  

Help for Dry Skin 

During the winter, it’s easy to feel uncomfortable in your own skin. Hydrating your air is important for long-term skincare and it can make a big difference during this season, especially if you have sensitive skin. Finding the right humidity level for you will go a long way in helping you feel like your normal self, no matter what the conditions outside are like.   

If you are shopping around for a new humidifier this holiday season, look for one with a warm mist setting. While cool mist humidifiers provide many of the same benefits, warm mist is naturally more enjoyable when the weather is cold. It can also humidify your room more quickly.
