Is your gas stove hurting your air quality?
-
1 min read
There are so many perks to gas stoves: They’re easy to control and you don’t have to wait for the burners to heat up like you do with an electric stovetop. However, because of the gas they use, they may lower your air quality while you cook.
How do gas stoves affect air quality?
These stoves use natural gas to spark a flame over which you can cook food. While this is quick and convenient, it can also release toxic pollutants into your kitchen, such as carbon monoxide and formaldehyde—neither of which are particularly friendly to humans nor pets.
Potential Negative Health Effects
The carbon monoxide and formaldehyde emissions from gas stoves can worsen respiratory illness symptoms and may cause headaches and wheezing.
Do gas stoves affect climate change?
There’s a debate over whether gas stoves should be banned. Not only can gas stove emissions cause adverse health effects, but they may also be affecting climate change.
Alternative Cooking Methods
If you’re interested in finding an alternative to gas stoves, there are several great options.
Fast: If you like the speediness of a gas stovetop, air fryers are a great substitute. Not only do they require minimal space, but they can also deliver crispy, golden results in minutes.
Convenient: Slow cookers are a great choice for busy chefs. You can pop in a hearty recipe and let it stew while you’re at work.
Electric: While hardcore gas stove fans may wince at the thought of an electric stovetop, they do produce fewer indoor pollutants and still provide a reliable cooking experience.
Other Steps You Can Take
If nothing can come between you and your gas stove, don’t worry. There are ways to reduce indoor pollution while you cook:
- Use an air purifier with 3-stage filtration and a great capacity to improve indoor air circulation, such as the Vital 200S.
- Turn on your stovetop ventilation fan while you cook.
- Open windows to let fresh air inside.
